Healthy Skin Tips

Updated: Nov 19, 2019

Great makeup begins with great skin. The healthier, and the better condition your skin is in - the better your makeup will appear, and the longer your makeup will last. We do use skin care to prep your skin for the makeup we apply, but the best results come from consistently looking after your skin, not only through skin care, but lifestyle changes as well.

Skincare Routine

Keeping a regular skincare routine using salon quality products will do wonders for your skin. Cleanse and moisturise morning and night, and gently exfoliate 1-2 times per week. Skinskitut, Jasmin Organics, Dermalogica, Ultraderm and Ultraceuticals are all great brands with high quality products available here in Australia. I've personally used and love each of these brands. The products you would need depends on your skin type, condition and your #skingoals! Have a skin consultation at a reputable beauty salon for recommendations to suit you. As a beauty therapist myself, I will also be writing more blog posts on skincare - it is something I'm really passionate about :)

Protect Your Skin

Wearing sunscreen daily is one of the best things you can possibly do for your skin. Sunscreen is the NUMBER ONE anti-ageing, anti-wrinkle, anti dark spot, anti sagging product you can use! By sticking to a routine of applying it daily, you will notice fewer signs of ageing and less pigmentation and dark spots. Even if you already have pigmentation and ageing, it is never too late to begin applying sunscreen daily. Research has shown that those who begin using broad spectrum sun protection later in life will see a noticeable reduction of every visible sign of ageing.

Get Your Beauty Sleep

Getting lots of rest is essential for healthy skin. While you are sleeping, your skin has the ability to heal itself and rejuvenate. The skin re-hydrates, recovers moisture and damaged cells are repaired overnight. Without adequate rest, the body releases more stress hormones, wreaking havoc on your skin! With stress, the severity of all inflammatory skin disorders (such as acne, rosacea) will worsen and collagen is attacked, affecting the condition of your skin. "Beauty sleep" is not a myth!

Healthy Skin from the Inside Out

Nourishing yourself with the proper foods improves your overall wellbeing and allows your body to function at its absolute best - assisting with skin health. Ensuring you're receiving the proper nutrients will help with the skins repairing processes and contribute to the overall look and condition of your skin. Antioxidants, Omega 3 Fatty Acids, Vitamin C, Iron and Zinc are especially important for nourishing the skin.

Exercise

Regular light exercise can be great for your complexion. Blood circulation is increased, bringing oxygen and nutrients to the skin which helps it to be glowing, vibrant and healthy. Exercising also reduces inflammation and can assist with regulating skin hormones.

Also, sweating itself is like having a mini facial - trapped oil and dirt are expelled from the pores, but be sure to wash your face afterwards!

Water Intake

Yes, we're really going there. You've heard this probably more than any other advice in your lifetime, but drinking plenty of water really is vital to keep your skin in great condition and looking its best! Drinking your recommended 8 glasses a day helps maintain the suppleness and elasticity of your skin. Water can also help with keeping your skin clear.

I hope these skin tips have taught you something new and can assist you with achieving healthier, clearer skin. It can also be a great idea to see a doctor or naturopath if you have skin concerns. Sometimes the problem is internal and no amount of skin care products can fix it, but treatment from a medical professional may be what is needed.

For other more minor skin issues, consider seeing a beauty therapist for regular skin treatments. They will speak to you about your skin concerns and what you are looking to achieve, and put you onto a treatment plan that will best help you to reach those #skingoals - whether that be smaller pores, becoming free of breakouts or acne scarring, combatting skin dryness and flaking or just having clearer, more even toned skin.
